Six Levels of Listening

Discount Listening - Treats the person communicating with disrespect or as if that person was not talking.

Condescending Listening - This level of listening is carried out with the intention of proving one’s point.

Pretend Listening - The focus of attention is on something else while it appears that attention is being placed on what is being said.

Selective Listening - Instead of hearing what is being said fully, there is attention to what is going to be said in response.

Attentive Listening - Seeks to understand before being understood. It is actively listening to the meaning of what is being said.

Empathetic Listening - Seeks to understand with the heart (emotions) and the mind (thoughts) whether this requires action or not. It is innately connecting with the other person in the deepest manner.

Thoughts to Ponder:

What level of listening do you do most?

 What relationship

Scripture:

James 1:19 My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, (New International Version)
