Joplin Tornado Relief

Monday, September 19, 2011 |
In one of the sessions this week someone told a counselor that when the tornado first happened it was like people were tripping over each other to help, "It was almost like my town, my neighborhood and my home were being invaded.  Now it seems like there is no one here to really help.  It went from a lot of noise then to where you can hear an acho now."

Although CCS is not making a lot of noise about still being in Joplin we are there and will be for some time.  The death toll continued to rise this week to 162 but it went somewhat unnoticed.  Not much is being heard about the ongoing recovery in Joplin but it is and CCS is being a part of it.

It was so good to be involved in helping with counseling today in Joplin.  In counseling sessions other counselors and I were assisting people with marriage and family issues along with grief and emotional issues.  One of the clients said, "The tornado was a cake walk compared to what it is like to try to get my life back together."

It is so incredible to see the response of people and their courage in addressing the devastation.  Bravery, valor, and resolution are so present in those taking advantage of the counseling.

I have such an appreciation for the counselors that are giving of their time to make this happen.

Truly Grateful,

In Joplin this week, it was an incredible experience to hear what people had gone through and how their lives had changed.  I come away from this  involvement  with a keen  awareness  of how fragile life really is.  Things can change so drastically in such a short period of time.  It has made me have a new appreciation of the present and letting those around me know how much I love and value them. Taking things for granted is  something  I have to avoid.

As I write this I pray for the people of Joplin asking God, "Give people assurance in this time of change."  May God use many ways and means to grant them the assurance of His presence after the storm.

"The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,"
- Psalm 18:2
